Abstract
Purpose: This study aims to examine change of the refractive power by the size change of pupils.

Methods: This study selected 50 myopes (100 eyes) and 9 hyperopes (17 eyes) not having any refractive surgery or ophthalmic history. Colvard Pupillometer (OASIS medical, USA) was used to measure the size of scotopic pupils. Refractive power was measured with Zywave (Baush & Lomb Inc, USA). The refractive power value were analyzed when the pupil size have 3.0mm from 6.0mm with interval 0.5mm. For differences of refractive error, ANOVA was conducted, and for relations of variables, correlation analysis was conducted.

Result: The mean age was 44.05¡¾11.91 years (25 to 64), and the mean size of scotopic pupils was 6.57¡¾0.52mm. Subjects were older, scotopic pupils were smaller in size(p=0.000). In myopic eyes, Spherical equivalent(SE) changed by ?0.52¡¾0.48D, increasing myopia. In hyperopic eyes, SE changed by 0.81¡¾0.34D, decreasing hyperopia. In the case of myopia, spherical equivalent depending on pupil size were -0.23¡¾0.23D(3.0mm~4.5mm) and -0.29¡¾0.30 D(4.5mm~6.0mm). Variation of spherical equivalent in myopia was increased according to age(p=0.008).

Conclusion: Refractive power of an eyeball due to increase of the pupil size was shown increase of myopia for nearsighted eyes and decrease of hyperopia for longsighted eyes. The correlation analysis results showed decreasing pupil size at scotopic condition and increasing variation of refractive power at myopia according to increasing age.
